Is it mandatory to provide the google_product_category?

No, this attribute is optional. However, providing it ensures your products are categorized correctly rather than relying on Google's automated, and potentially inaccurate, systems.

Should I use the ID 4191 or the full path?

You can use either the numeric ID 4191 or the full path. Using the ID is often preferred because it is language-independent and less prone to formatting errors.

Can I use product_type instead of google_product_category?

No, product_type is a free-form field for your internal use and does not replace the standardized google_product_category required by Google for taxonomy purposes.

Desks Category Overview

The Desks category, identified by ID 4191 and the full path Furniture > Office Furniture > Desks, encompasses dedicated work surfaces designed for professional or home offices. This is a level-three category within the Google Product Taxonomy and sits directly under the Office Furniture parent category.

What Belongs in This Category

This category is intended for furniture pieces designed specifically for writing, typing, or computer work. Based on product trends in the US market, this includes various configurations and styles such as:

Traditional writing desks and secretary desks
Computer desks including L-shaped models
Wood or metal office desks with storage drawers
Minimalist home office work tables

What Does Not Belong Here

Items that do not fit here should be mapped to the appropriate neighboring categories. Products that serve as seating belong in Office Chairs. If you are selling integrated furniture packages, use Office Furniture Sets. Items that function as generic tables or stand-alone modular workstations belong in Workspace Tables or Workstations & Cubicles, respectively.

Feed Implementation

To include this in your feed, use either the ID 4191 or the full path Furniture > Office Furniture > Desks. Remember that the attribute is optional but recommended for higher accuracy, as it helps Google understand your product data better than automatic categorization. While you should also populate your internal product_type attribute for your own organization, this does not replace the required Google taxonomy mapping. Ensure you choose the most specific path available to comply with platform standards and improve the relevancy of your shopping ads across the US market and other global regions.
