Should I use the ID or the full path for the category?

Both are accepted by Google Merchant Center. However, using the numeric ID 3410 is often preferred as it is language-independent and less prone to formatting errors.

Is the google_product_category attribute mandatory for my products?

It is optional, as Google can automatically assign a category. Providing the correct ID or path is recommended to ensure your products are accurately classified.

Can I use product_type to categorize my items instead?

Yes, product_type is a separate, free-form field for your own internal classification. It does not replace the google_product_category requirement.
